Summer Race Series Results

For those of you who braved the heat and the rain this past week, congrats. Results from the humid Wednesday 5K in Prospect Park here and the thunder-struck Thursday X/C race in Van Cortlandt Park (won by NBR's Pavel Marossine here.)

High School X/C Runners, Watch This

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twfTpdko6_E&feature=youtu.be

It's a Katy Perry knockoff, though captures the angst that I had (and I think my teammates) during X/C - in a hilarious way.

NYC Half vs World X/C

Meb, Adbi, Ryan, Galen ... they are all here.

Meanwhile, there's this thing called the WORLD Cross Country Championships that's being run tomorrow as well. (Cross country continues to get no love, sigh).

Thankfully, Shalene, Lewy Boulet and Huddle are out there to represent the women (and it should be noted that Kara Goucher, one of the headliners for the NYC Half, ran the U.S. championships earlier as part of her comeback from the birth of her first child last year).

For those interested, Letsrun.com has a ton of stuff on tomorrow's race.

Two Races, One Day

Not for me, I might add, but I know of at least one person who shelled out the money for the Jingle Bell Jog (at least $40) for a 4 mile loop on the roads of Prospect Park, then turned around a short time later to run the Peter Rabbit 3 Mile (?) Cross Country race (at least $7) (two loops of the long meadow/ballfield).

Haven't seen the results yet for the second race, though Brooklyn did itself well in the NYRR race. Among those who picked up age group awards were Tony Watson (M50-54) and Yves Roger (M60-64), both of the Prospect Park Track Club and Kelly Chin (F30-34, and second overall). More than 4,100 runners finished

Crankin' on Cross Country

OK, enuf of the post-NYC marathon blahs - let's get cranking on some cross-country races, especially since the weather is so cooperative.

Perhaps not today, I'll admit I love 60 degree days, but it's a little warm for the crisp, cutting edge of the air you need (and the breath you can see) before the start of a good, old-fashioned X/C clash. But what about last weekend?

While it's creeping into the middle of November, and your race season is winding down, there's still at least three races you want to put on your schedule:

Nov. 15: NYRR X/C Championships (5K), Van Cortlandt

The traditional 5K course at Van Cortlandt in the Bronx. A great race.

Dec. 5: Peter Rabbit 3 Mile (Prospect Park)

Great local race. It's two loops of the main lawn in Prospect Park, and deceptively difficult (try running it on your own some time). Last year, frost had set in.

Dec. 13: NYRR Pete McArdle X/C Classic (15K), Van Cortlandt

Three loops. Use some of that marathon training to pound out a solid time.

Lace up the flats or the X/C spikes and get out there - what are you waiting for?

Let's Get Ready for the Fall

Whew, the "summer" is almost over, and it's been pretty intense. A couple of trips thru the main Portlands of the U.S. (including a run in the Hood to Coast relay race), a strange recovery to my knee injury (it doesn't hurt, I don't know why, not questioning it), some great races at the Olympics. (Bolt? Bekele? Both awesome.)

But I'm ready to get ready for the fall racing season. My target races are in November, and because of the knee injury destroying my summer base building - it's all X/C for me. Then, maybe, a winter marathon? We'll see. Such decisions are not unique, as I'm sure many of you who are aiming at New York and running into injury problems may need to revise their plans.

A September and October schedule for upcoming races will be upcoming later this weekend as I have the Labor Day weekend to track down some races. I'm also going to post a revised X/C schedule, now that the local USATF has posted its schedule. Rest assured, pretty much every weekend through mid-November has an X/C race, including many in Van Cortlandt.

On Sunday, of course, is the massive Nike Human Race (the New York version is over on Roosevelt Island) -- though I'm expecting that for most participants, it will be less a race than a mass celebration of runners who wear Nike products. There's also a 4 mile X/C race up at Van Cortlandt Park. For those who want to see some national competition, the New Haven 20K takes place on Labor Day. Live blogging on the race takes place here.

Marathon trainers can also benefit from the three-day weekend: How about a 15 mile run on Saturday, recovery on Sunday, and then a 10-mile run on Monday?

A Rare X/C Appearance on TV

According to the USATF:

"The 2008 USA Cross Country Championships will be televised in association with the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships February 24, from 5-7 p.m. on ESPN 2."

Dathan Ritzenhein and Shalene Flanagan ran away with the main championships, though perhaps we'll see snippets of some of the other races, which were held in San Diego.

And yes, the indoor competition will be awesome to see as well.

Cross Country in Prospect Park

A good old-fashioned cross-country race is the perfect reminder that when you're running in Prospect Park ... realize that it's a park! And take advantage of the varying terrains rather than doing loop after 3.35 mile loop.

Today's Everything But the Kitchen Sink X/C race started just north of the Picnic House on the western edge of the park. One full loop of the meadow, sticking the edges, and doing those short, but very steep hills, and then a run down to the ballfields before heading off into the woods and doing a mix of trail, pavement, grass to create a second loop, both of them roughly 2 miles. Doesn't that sound more fun that doing two loops of Central Park as part of the Manhattan Half?

The challenging part of today's race was the terrain. Unlike the grassy section of Van Cortlandt, which seemed comparatively pancake flat, the loop of the long meadow was complete with undulating hills, tree roots and branches, sandy ballfield, and beat-up fields that have shoe prints from countless soccer games frozen in place.

No results yet (probably in the next day), but that ultimately wasn't the point for most of us today.

I'll pull together a list of local trail races, with links, in the next day or two, for those who are interested. Noting the Urban Environmental Challenge in early April, a North Face sponsored Endurance run in mid-April, the Leatherman's Loop later that month, and the Long Island Greenbelt 25K and 50K in early May - a link to most of them is here.
