Kleinerman Near Capacity/Other Marathon QualifiersIf you're waking up and saying - hey, I need to get started on my New York City Marathon qualifying races, here's a quick look at what's upcoming for January thru March:

*Jan. 9: Joe Kleinerman 10K is near capacity, so sign up now!

*Jan. 24: Manhattan Half is sold out

*Feb. 7: NYRR Gridiron 4M

*Feb. 20: Al Gordon 4M is a marathon qualifier this year (though still held in Prospect Park)

*March 7: Washington Heights Salsa, Blues and Shamrock 5K is the first club points race of the season

*March 20: United Airlines NYC Half has charity spots open

That's it for the first three months of the year. A couple of other things to note:

*Jan. 28 is when the entries for the May 21 Brooklyn Half open (and quite possibly close)

*March 26: Central Park Spring Classic is *not* a marathon qualifier. However, the Scotland Run being held the following weekend is (entries are not open yet)Brooklyn Runnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08864757096225104891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3666058531918387271.post-33032618141482049912015-12-31T09:40:00.000-05:002015-12-31T09:40:13.550-05:00Happy New Year's Eve!It's yet another cloudy day here in Brooklyn, but still nearly ideal running weather to get in your last miles of 2015.

For those of you who are planning, the Midnight Run in Central Park tonight, it looks like your race will go off at a balmy 42 degrees or so. A reminder - this race is already sold out. Those who will be tweeting should use #MidnightRun -- not to be confused with the awesome 1988 movie which is well worth it.

Professional runners in this year's race include Lisa Dobriskey and Joe Stillin.

2016 training begins in earnest tomorrow.Brooklyn Runnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08864757096225104891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3666058531918387271.post-66831549182732269032015-09-14T18:54:00.002-04:002015-09-14T19:19:19.776-04:00Brooklyn's Best at the Mile!I ran a mile yesterday.

Other than it marked the 16th day in a row I have run (yes, comeback!), it wasn't all that special.

But I know some people who ran just a mile yesterday who *did* do something special! :-) Yes, those hardy few who dared to venture outside of the safe environs of Brooklyn to go run the Fifth Avenue Mile.

Lest anyone think I'm mocking here (and, in rereading this, I'm only mocking myself, so let's be clear), racing a mile is hard, HARD, HARD! The one time I did the Fifth Avenue Mile, I coughed for 20 minutes afterward - yes, my best-age graded performance ever in a NYRR race, but it came at a cost.

Anyway, some highlights from yesterday's race (based on the data on the NYRR Web site that I'm analyzing, so if the data are wrong or I've taken one too many shortcuts, apologies):

Among the men:

*Ciaran O'Donovan, 31, from NBR, took top Brooklyn honors, speeding to a 4:29, good enough for 50th overall by time (this includes I believe all races) and 7th in his category

*Stefan Lingmerth, 38, who hails from Sweden and runs for WBTC, ran a 4:31, tops in his category

*Daniel Gercke, 49, of CPTC, raced a 4:49, taking 5th in his category (NOTE to self, I need to get a lot faster to get onto the awards stand). Gercke also topped men for age-graded performance with an 87.59%

*John Shostrom, 61, of BRRC, grabbed 3rd in his category with a 5:36

Among the women:

*Two people are listed on the top, both with a 5:18. Marie-ange Brumelot, 22, with QDR, and NBR's Sayo Yamagata, 30.

*Hope Sanders, 42, with RNYC, was the top female master from Brooklyn with a 5:25, and had the highest age-graded score at 83.5%

*Local clubs had a presence at the top, with Melissa Burgin, 30, from PPTC at 5:32, Connie Fried, 26, also from NBR at 5:35 and Grace Eginton, 27, from SBRC at 5:43

Congrats all!
Beautiful day for a run! Just a reminder that the winter days are behind us, finally! Today sauntered down from Brooklyn Heights into Dumbo and back through Brooklyn Bridge Park. A bit over three miles, easy on the legs after a long run Saturday. See route here

Today marks the second of three Saturdays of Summer Streets - our own block party (well, we have to share it with cyclists, but there's plenty of room on Broadway). Great excuse to get out there and run long! I was over the Brooklyn Bridge this morning and marveling at all the Team in Training and Fred's Team runners coming the other directions - and shortly realized why.

Summer Streets goes thru next Saturday, with plenty of places for water, breaks and simply a chance to run across friends. Yes there are occasional places you have to stop for the light, but it's a great chance to do something different for a long run in the city. The route stretches from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, just shy of 7 miles.

Brooklyn Runnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08864757096225104891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3666058531918387271.post-77201240512566715622013-04-20T17:36:00.000-04:002013-04-20T17:36:20.439-04:00Boston Marathon, NYRR Races and SecurityFor those of you running tomorrow's race in Central Park (and this may apply to other races), doubtless you've seen the new security actions:

*Enhanced security restriction
*Encouragement not to bring a bag
*New clear bags to hold baggage
*No trash cans in race vicinity

It's easy to overreact to the past week's events. I was up in Boston, left the finish line a half hour before. And I'm from there (so was also keenly interested in yesterday's hour-by-hour manhunt, which left family and friends in lockdown for a day)

That said: If you let your life be controlled by the tyrannical few, it's going to make us all suffer. That's why David Ortiz comments before the Red Sox/Royals game today are poignant:

"This is our f------ city and nobody is going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong."

We live in New York, under constant possibility of a terrorist attack. And so you take that into account with everything you do. Always. But you don't lose faith, and you don't give in.

The choice we make by living in the U.S. is enhanced civil liberties. And for now, it means that it's really easy to get a gun (or any kind of explosive material). I'm not happy about that decision, but that's the case right now. Counterpoint: I'm also hugely happy that we have the chance to have this debate.

The additional issues tomorrow strike me as an overreaction. NYRR: If you do this tomorrow - why didn't you do this for every race since 9/11. We live with these fears every day. And we keep moving forward. We keep wary, we keep alert. And we live our lives.

We run. And we are strong.

Below is from NYRR:

Race-day registration, T-shirt pickup, and baggage drop-off will be located inside Rumsey Playfield. Everyone who enters Rumsey Playfield will be subject to a security screening.

We strongly encourage you not to bring a bag to Central Park. However, if you’re registering or picking up your race materials on race day and bring a bag, you will be given a clear bag at the entrance to Rumsey Playfield. You must transfer the contents of your own bag into the clear bag before you proceed to the registration tent. Any unattended bags will be confiscated by NYPD and could cause an interruption to the day’s events.

There will be no trash cans in the race vicinity this weekend. We encourage you to hand your trash to our volunteers and staff members.

Of course last year in was in the middle of a snowfall (a fun, non-timed race nonetheless), and who can forget the race a couple of years back where it was 12-14 degrees at start and the water cups were frozen?

Central Park was relatively clear when I was there earlier today - suspect some icy conditions in some parts, but the running lanes were pretty good at about 4pm - pretty dry.Brooklyn Runnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08864757096225104891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3666058531918387271.post-15538067622092355642013-01-25T19:34:00.001-05:002013-01-25T19:34:20.485-05:00Brooklyn Half May Be on Weekend of May 18-19According to NYRR website, which has posted races for the rest of the year.
