Random thoughts as I was sitting on the stoop this morning reading the paper and watching runner after runner head toward the Brooklyn Promenade ...
* The blog is coming back after a self-imposed hiatus. Have some different thoughts on how I want to approach it (beyond actually posting more). More to come ....
* Brooklyn Half is in **three weeks** You excited?
*Congratulations to the 131 people from Brooklyn who finished the Boston Marathon this year. Top finishers from the borough were Ben Leese (2:32:41) among men, Lauren Perkins (3:02:58) among women.
* For those of you looking to capture marathon qualifiers on the NYRR race circuit, note that the Healthy Kidney 10K and Japan Run (4 miles) the weekend of May 10-11 are nearing capacity.
* Website of the day: The Brooklyn Half Pre-Party (three days of fun in Dumbo) in the days leading up to the Half

Running in the Humidity
Phew, this has been one tough week to run.
I've done my best to dodge the humidity, running in the early mornings, late evenings where the temperature has been great. Not really all that successful, I've found, with sweat dripping off my brow within a mile, and regularly coming back from runs having dropped 3-4 pounds despite efforts to stay hydrated.
But if you're training for a late summer/early fall race, you've got to do it. Need I remind the Boston Marathon wannabes (me! me!) who are looking for a last-minute qualifying time for 2012, the entries open on Sept. 12, which pretty much rules out most of the great fall marathons in the area.

As I was reminded earlier after whining to folk about today's run, which was cut short ... again ... by the humidity: You set a goal, you go after it, you do what you have to do.
Today's run: Prospect Park, over the Brooklyn Bridge, a loop around the southern tip of Manhattan, back up to the Williamsburg Bridge, over and then along Kent and Flushing before finally collapsing near the Brooklyn Bridge Park. 4 miles short of the planned 20.
So, you pick yourself up, and do it again. :-) Maybe tomorrow will be better.

PRs Tumble at Boston
All I can say is that I want to run a marathon with a 20-mph tailwind. (Get over the net downhill course, marathon-record critics - Boston is punishing).
WOW. Awesome times.
The searchable database is here. Some top Brooklyn results:
NBR's Danny Mazzuchin was the boro's top finisher, crushing the race with a 2:48:45. Top female honors go to Kir Selert, who blazed to a 3:01:55.

Heading to Boston and Not Running the Marathon?
Sign up tomorrow for the BAA 5K, held Sunday of Marathon weekend.
Entries are limited to 5,000 - I suspect that you won't see a lot of local entries, but a ton of national entries as "running tourists" (I'm one this year) converge.
It won't close out as fast as the marathon, but will probably get filled quickly. Entries start at 10 a.m. The course is relatively flat (there's one short, steep hill).

Numbers Game in Boston
Interesting article here on the BAA and the Boston Marathon and the challenges it faces in terms of fairly granting entry to everyone who wants to run Boston (sound familiar?). My two cents, for what it's worth:
*Lower the qualifying times and provide guaranteed entries (total, 10,000)
*Lottery for others using existing qualifying times (total 6,000)
*Charity et al (total 5,000)
Also out recently, a two-part article (part 1, part 2) over at Runners World with an interview of Mary Wittenberg
And finally, a very funny look at what Prospect Park West (and other streets with bike lanes) are destined to become

Boston Sells Out in 8 Hours
Faster than I thought, though not totally unexpected. If you were hoping to run, hope you got in.

WSJ Weighs in on Boston Qualifying
Just noticed this: The WSJ has an article in today's paper examining whether the female qualifying standards for Boston are "too soft". The online version is behind a paywall, though it may be freely available - search for the title "It's Time for Women to Run Faster"

Boston Marathon Registration 10/18 at 9 a.m.
Registration for next April's race start on Monday morning at 9 a.m.
I've got to tell you, I know *a lot* of Brooklyn runners who got closed out of last year's Boston race. They will all be going online that day ... as will everyone else. (Hope the BAA servers don't crash). Could it close in a day? Possibly. Will it be open next weekend (so someone can eek out that last minute qualifying time?) I wouldn't count on it.

Fall Marathon Woes
If you're running a fall marathon, though procrastinating about a choice - get a move on.
Consider: Mount Desert Island Marathon, ME, on 10/17, Baystate Marathon in Lowell, MA on 10/17, and Mohawk-Hudson Marathon in Schenectady, NY on 10/10 - all closed.
Hartford and Philadelphia remain open.
For now.
For those seeking a Boston qualifying time at this point, with no plans: Hartford on Oct. 9 seems to be the best bet. I still think that Boston will close within days - if not hours - of its registration opening of Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. (at that point, the server will crash for a bit, I suspect). Too many people got burnt last year, and I don't think you can count on running a race the following weekend, or any later in the fall, if you want to get into Boston 2011. Philly won't do it.

How Quickly Will Boston Close?
I'm talking the 2010 marathon. Why ask this now? The BAA Half Marathon (6,000 runners) closed in two hours. Originally I thought it would be in a week (registration opens Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.). Now, assuming the BAA servers don't crash, I think they'll be done in a day.

Boston Marathon Tomorrow
It's hard not to get a chill down your back when you think of the race - and I'm not even racing!
I know it's a media buildup, but it's also another Meb vs Ryan Hall race. One can only hope you get something even close to the Beardsley/Salazar race from 1982. (My guess - one of the two will be in the run for first, but there will be someone else pushing that person).
Good luck to everyone, particularly those from Brooklyn, who are participating. The race will be Universal Sports, with coverage starting at 9:30 a.m. both on TV and online.
And a reminder, for those who are thinking of qualifying for Boston 2011 - the race opens up in September, and given last year's early November closure, my guess it will close out in record time this year.

Boston 2010 Entries Closed
Folk, if you didn't register, or were banking on some of the later fall/winter races to use as a qualifying time: you're hosed.
Boston Marathon 2010 entries are closed for 2010, according to a posting on the Web site.

Boston 2010
Speaking of races in 2010: Many of you have eyes on Boston (including some running in today's race). Note the notice on the BAA Web site:
"If you have met the qualifying standards and intend to enter the race, the B.A.A. urges you to register now and not wait as registration is on pace to reach its maximum field size earlier than ever before. "
It wouldn't be a good thing to run one of the late fall marathons (hello, Philadelphia), hit the qualifying time, only to discover the 2010 race had been closed out.

Marathon News
* The historical Yonkers Marathon is this weekend
* Philadelphia Marathon on Nov. 22 is sold out for 2009
* New Jersey Marathon early fee deadline is Oct. 1 (still plenty of spots at this point, but you only have to pay $80 - very cheap for a marathon these days)
* Registration is available for 2010 Boston Marathon (if you've run a qualifying marathon, and are thinking about doing it, worth getting it in by the end of the year).

First Boston Marathon
Nice piece here by a member of the Prospect Park Track Club about her first Boston Marathon (second item).
"I’d finally made it to the starting line at Boston!! I was able to keep the pace under control and got into a rhythm about 2 miles in. I was ready and everything was going according to plan. ... "

Running Shoes: Bad for You?
So, you're sitting in a Boston-area hotel, nervously sweating out the final few hours before the race you've spent the past year focusing on (qualifying, training, etc.). So, to while away the hours, you turn to the local newspaper (the Boston Globe, one of the many whose existence is threatened.)
And then you read this passage:
"Running shoes are a failed experiment. After nearly four decades of technological gimmicks and outrageous prices, they simply do not perform the function that's their only reason for existence -- protecting your feet."
The article in today's Sunday magazine, "What Ruins Running," argues that the softer running shoes caused us to change our running mechanics, and rather than landing on the ball of our foot, we now more prominently make a heel-to-toe stride, and that's caused even more problems.
The change in foot plant is one of the reasons why there's a number of proponents of barefoot running (and, for that matter, one of the marketing reasons behind the Nike Free running shoes).
Not saying I totally buy the argument made in the article, but I'm also fully in the camp of that individuals are unique (duh) and that some types of training will work well for some and not for others.
Meanwhile, something to think about.

Boston Marathon Monitoring
For those of you who want to watch the race Monday online, it can be seen here on Universal Sports, with coverage beginning at 9:30 a.m. Can Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher pull off an American double? Realistically, the odds on both of them doing it are slim - but can you imagine the excitement and the boon to distance running in this country if it happens?
115 runners from Brooklyn are listed on the entry database. And here are the instructions to track specific athletes.
And for those of you who get inspired, here's a list of entry qualifying times in case you want to try to gain entry in the 2010 version - being run a year from today.
Best of luck everyone!

From Brooklyn to Boston

For those of you doing the traditional taper, this is the last big weekend of training - from here on it's pulling back, doing the important prep work to get ready for the race. One of my friends said she just got the race instructions in the mail -- awesome.
