Park to Park Run Date Changed to July 13

This posted on the NYRR Web site ...

Due to a Bon Jovi concert in Central Park on July 12, the New York Park to Park race has been changed from Saturday, July 12, to Sunday, July 13, at 8:00 a.m. Registered runners who do not contact NYRR by 11:59 p.m. tonight will remain entered in the New York Park to Park race on the new date of July 13, 2008.

Okay, what is WITH the last minute changes??? Every other running club seems to be able to pick a date and set it, but this is the second time this year that they've changed a race after announcing it.

I was planning to run the Park to Park but am signed up for the Boilermaker in Utica on Sunday, so won't be able to with the change. How frustrating.

To be fair, this may not have been a problem with NYRR. The Bon Jovi concert was announced at the beginning of the month. Since it's free (albeit with tickets), you know the 60,000 fans are going to be streaming there early on (can you imagine dodging even more people on the race course?)

Good luck with Utica on Sunday - that's a race I want to run some day.

Many of the reschedulings and cancellations of races (many more than two this year) may well be the fault of "the city" for giving and then withdrawing permits, but it doesn't make it any less disappointing.

In addition to the Brooklyn Half, which was rescheduled after many of us forewent (is that a word?) out-of-town plans during the school vacation, there's the Staten Island and Queens halves, which have been scheduled, then evaporated from the schedule and then were rescheduled, and the Run to Home Plate which was cancelled entirely.

From what I read in the small print on the MLB website, there are 60,000 free tickets, but no promise that the ticket will get you entry, so of course the fans are going to arrive early.

I've got to think, in this particular race, given the promotion that NYRR has made -- this isn't one of the ones they wanted to reschedule, especially as the club expands its international reach.

Sadly, when it comes down to it, Bon Jovi is going to trump the runners. Of course, those who do run on Sunday will get a chance to see what was left behind.

Maybe this was just to show how European they can be: i.e., you never know when something is going to be delayed or cancelled because of a strike or something.

Promotion? Did I miss something? This didn't seem to be any more heavily promoted than any other weekend race. That said, there are a certain number of tourists who plan to "run a race in Central Park" as part of their experience, and some were surely disappointed.
